I went along to the Barbican to go to see the Basquiat exhibition. The exhibition was very busy and there was a lot of people around that seemed memorised by the painting and the pieces of work that surround us.
Overall I didn't really enjoy the exhibition. His work I felt like didn't really convey a strong enough messages and I really wasn't a fan of his style of work which was so free, loose and lots of different colors, textures and shape. His story and life as a person seems very interesting, there was a video that he filmed about his life, which I watched at the exhibition and he seemed a very cool person, very chilled and very creative. What I liked about him and what I took away from the exhibition was that he was didn't care about what other people thought of him or his style, he created what he wanted when he wanted, I also admire how hard he work on some thing that he loved.
Basquiat work:
Unfortunately in the exhibition, that Barbican won't let you take any photos. So any I attempted to take were awful as it had to be done really fast. So I looked online and found some press images of the exhibition and some photos of Basquiat work.
I didn't like this painting as for me the use of all the bright primary colors, give it a very child like quality to it. The strokes of the lines personal for me are far too many and very scruffy that it looks chaotic. This is probably what the painting is meant to communicate. The very simple shapes given for the face features as well, gives it an inhuman quality. I just personal don't like it visual.
I like the color scheme used here, I love the pale yellow and pastel green, on the black background and then hints of red and orange.
I thought that his relationship and collaboration with Andy Warhol seemed very interesting. The work that they produced was very different style but at the same time it worked.
This was one of my favorite painting as its the same logo but Warhol and Basquiat have very different approach and style.
