D&AD John Lewis Brief // Section One Brief, Research & Idea Generating

These images are showing what is happening to the disposable plastics that are being used by society and how our throwaway actions have massive consequence that people don't think about.

Video research I carried out:

1. A Platic Ocean

2. How plastic is made

- I wanted to understand how plastic is made and question do we really need it in our society for dispoable objects?

3. Product lifecycle

- The video shows the start and end of plastic water bottles, most people only think of the product when the person is using the item, they don't think of the start and end and how this impact society. This has allowed me to identify why this is such an important issue to tackle.

4. How can we keep plastic out of the water

5. Going Green shouldn't be this hard

- Shows a very extreme version of a zero waste lifestyle, however, I can take ideas and adapt them to something that more of society can easily use.

6. Greenpeace's end Ocean Plastic Tour of Scotland

  • This video shows how close to home plastics hits.
  • All these beautiful landscapes and wildlife around the UK are being affected by the irresponsible disposal of plastics.
  • The plastics bottle break down into microscopic chunks of plastics and many varieties of sea animals are ingesting and affecting the food chain, to the point where humans are now digesting plastics.
  • This video to me demonstrates that disposable plastics should be got rid of, it is to harmful to the environment.

1. This is NYC Store is an Environmentalist's Wonderland

- Shows a Zero waste store in New York, I think it's for a very niche market. But I thought I could take ideas and principles and give it a tone of voice that connects to target audience more.

2. Zeo Waste SkinCare & Makeup Routine

- Demonstrates what is on offer for Zero waste beauty routine which is very limited and the look doesn't meet the current trend and how consumers use make up.

3. Zero Waste Shopping: how to Buy Liquids Package Free

- How washing up liquid is brought, by bring jars back to refill, this is where I got the idea of having luxury containers and bring back jars to fill with cosmetics products.

4. Trimming your waste

5. 12 Zero Waste Swaps for beginners

- Shows images of the zero waste store in New York. It is really well design however this tone of voice feels to ethical and hippy to suite most people lifestyle and current trends.

- This is how zero waste markets operate, this is their soultion to cut down on plastics.

- The packing and products do not meet the mass market. It feel that you have to give up luxary items to live this life.

- This is currenlty the feel of cosmetic products, as you can see they look luxary and it is an item that people desire.

- I looked back into the past at 1920, as they have systems in place to consume cosmetics and this was actually a zero waste structure, it was a lot better of the environment.
- I also looked at how luxury and long lasting the bottle looked, these packaging a person would not throw them away, but keep them for a lifetime.

- The space of the cosmetic store is going to be really important, I wanted it a place that felt luxury and the complete opposite to how the current zero waste stores operate.

- I love how elegant the 1920s fashion style was and I wanted to infuse a little bit of that feel into my project.

- The dressing table was very important back in the 1920 and still is today for women, it's where they spend every day getting ready. Objects being placed on their should feel personal and represent the person.

- These items are made out of glass and metal and get reused.

Reflection of Research & Idea Generation

Research:
I think that this was a very strong part of the project, that I researched in both first and secondhand sources. I researched into a lot of areas that were linked to this retail, this gave me a good understanding of the area that I was working within. I learnt a lot of new knowledge in this area. The area that I learnt the most was about Global warming and Zero waste stores. This information that I found out has also now influenced my own personal life by trying to reduce the amount of disposable plastic. Going into all the makeup stores around London was a good start, as it allowed me to observe and experience how each brand treated their customers and see what the brand was trying to communicate. I think having a lot of broad research, will be a good grounding for the next part of my project to think of not how to make a good experience but how to solve the problem and think what the future of retail will be.

Idea Generation:
I think a strength of this part of the project was that I started with reflecting and analysing the research, my self and my ethics. From this, I wrote out a Manifesto of how design, retail & Ethics should fit together. This allowed me to have a core and direction. The idea came around as my flatmate had a problem with trying to go zero waste and wanting to but the problem she was facing was that business was not having a product that was good, functional or pretty. This mixed with the research I carried out, meant that it allowed me to develop an interesting idea that tried to solve a big issue in a mass market way, asnwering the brief which was what is the future of retail in 5 years time.

I think a weakness of this project was that I didn't have lots of ideas to start, I just had one idea, this might have made me think quite narrowly about this project. For example, I didn't think or research into areas such as technology or how the process of stores will work in 5 years time.  However, the idea that I had I did go into a lot of depth and kept refining the ideas until it was more manageable to communicate.

If I was to do this project again:

1. I would have taken more time to think of very different ideas instead of jumping into the first one I had. This might have given me a better option, but it could have gone the other way and given me a worse option and wasted time.

2. I would have done more primary research, I went instore stores, including John Lewis and I talked to my flatmate. But I should have talked to a wide range of people and told them what my idea was and see the feedback and see if it is an idea that they would do. This would have meant that my idea could have been judged by people that were John Lewis customer and not family and friends of mine, so the information wouldn't have been biased.
